Brian Hare
Author of The Genius of Dogs and co-founder of Dognition
Dr. Brian Hare is a professor of evolutionary anthropology at Duke University and a member of the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience. He received his Ph.D. from Harvard University, founded the Hominoid Psychology Research Group while at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, and subsequently founded the Duke Canine Cognition Center when arriving at Duke University. Dr. Hare has co-authored three academic books and published over 100 scientific papers including in Science, Nature and PNAS. Dr. Hare’s research has consistently received national and international media coverage including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, National Geographic, Time, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times and The Chicago Tribune. His work has featured on television programs including 60 minutes, NOVA, and Nature as well as the series Is your dog a genius that he hosted for National Geographic Wild. Dr. Hare’s book The Genius of Dogs, written with his wife Vanessa Woods, is a New York Times Bestseller and together they founded the citizen science company Dognition.com that has helped tens of thousands of dogs be better understood by their human families. His new book Survival of the Friendliest was published in 2020 by Penguin Random House Dr. Hare lives in Chapel Hill, North Carolina with his family and his best friend Congo.
